A Study on Jajin Taryeong the Accompanying Music for Present-Day Jeongjae

Jeong, Mi-young

This study aimed to examine the musical characteristics and changing aspects of Jajin Taryeong the accompanying music for present day jeongjae. Accompanying music pieces were first categorized for each period, referring to previous studies and video clips of in-person performances of jeongjae. As a result, it was found that even 1956 Jajin Taryeong was already performed in jeongjae. In the jeongjae video data from the National Gugak Archive(estimated in 1966), Jajin Taryeong was marked as ‘Moneun Taryoeng’, and its meldoy was same as that of ‘Jajin Heoteun Taryeong’ in Daepungryu. In the 1980s, Jeolhwa was sped up composing 4 beats, and that was marked as ‘Jajeun taryeong’. The melody of Jajin Taryeong consisted of 5 constituent notes Hwang[黃]-Tae[夾]-Jung [仲]-Im[林]-Nam[無] in a total of 12 jangdans(A-A -B-A ), mostly repetitive melodies and sequential progressions. It was also found that in actual jeongjae that the 12 jangdans were not played in order, but only the first to the third jangdan were repeated, and the order of the performance was different depending on the number of jangdans. When shifting from Jajin Taryeong to Taryeong, the first jangdan was slowly played and passed onto the next jangdan at the signal of the janggu. Lastly, the relationship between Jajin Taryeong and existing music was reviewed. In comparison with the 1966 video data, the melody of the present day Jajin taryeong was very similar to that of Mugo(舞鼓). It was found that Jung[中] Heoteun Taryeong in Heoteun Taryeong of folk Daepungryu, which was passed down in the National Gugak Center, was the most similar to the tempo and melody of present day Jajin Taryeong. Thus, present day Jajin Taryeong was used as a Mugo accompaniment music piece or Heoteun Taryeong in the 1960s and then has been appropriately modified to fit the dance. In the future, there is a need for much discussion and research on accompaniment music for jeongjae.
