Analysis of Sanhyeong(散形) of Tang Pipa’s Pyeongjo(平調) and Gyemyeonjo(界面調) in Akhakguebeom(樂學軌範)

Yi, Suk-hui

The Tang Pipa introduced in Akhakguebeom is a musical instrument to play both Tang music and Korean music based on corresponding tones. This study set out to examine the characteristics of Sanhyeong characteristics of Tang Pipa’s Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo under the goal of making the theoretical system of Tang Pipa’s tones more concrete. In Akhakguebeom, the tone position of Tang Pipa Gyemyeonjo in Ha 4(下4) is not Junghyeon(中絃) 3 Ju(柱) but Junghyeon 2 Ju in relation to the tone positions of Tang Pipa Sanhyeong. In the Sanhyeong of Tang Pipa’s Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo in the book, all the notes are distributed above 4 Ju except for Ha 4 of Gyemyeonjo. It is different from the tones of Tang music played with Tang Pipa using only the scope of 1~4 Jus. As for the intervals of Tang Pipa, the interval between each Ju is constant at 2 Yul(律) under 4 Ju used in Tang music, whereas it is not constant, varying among 2, 3, and 4 Yul, above 4 Ju used in Korean music. Since the interval between each Ju is not constant from 4 to 11 Ju in Tang Pipa with different intervals between Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo, Yeokan (力按) is applied to Sang 6(上6) of Jahyeon(子絃) 11 Ju and Ha 1(下1) of Junghyeon 6 Ju in Pyeongjo and to Jahyeon 10 Ju in Gyemyeonjo to make it fit for the Johyeon(調絃) of Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo. There are four Hyeons(絃) in the Tang Pipa including Jaheon, Junghyeon, Daehyeon(大絃), and Muhyeon(武絃). Only open notes are used for Daehyeon in the Sanhyeong of Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo. It is different from the their distribution across all of Jahyeon, Junghyeon, Daehyeon, and Muhyeon in the Sangjo(上調) and Hajo(下調) of Tang music. In the Gaebanghyeon(開放絃) of Tang Pipa Sanhyeong in Akhakguebeom, Siyonggung(時 用宮) is used as a Gungsangjabo(宮商字譜). In the Tang Pipa Sanhyeong of the book, Jahyeon Chi(徵), Junghyeon Gung(宮), Daehyeon Gung, and Muhyeon Takchi(濁徵) are used. Compared with the notes of Jahyeon 9 Ju in octave relations with Gaebanghyeon, however, the notes of Jahyeon Gaebanghyeon should be Takchi, which means that Junghyeon and Daehyeon should be Takgung(濁宮) and that Muhyeon should be Baetakchi(培濁徵). The notes of Gaebanghyeon are the same between Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo across the four Hyeons of Tang Pipa. Despite different intervals between Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo, the notes of Gaebanghyeon Chi and Gung are the same between Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo with the same Yul names for Chi and Gung on Siyong Gungsangjabo(時用宮商字譜). The study applied Sokakchiljo(俗樂七調) to the Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo Sanhyeong of Tang Pipa and found the followings : first, there are three octaves from Goseon(㑬) to Jungcheonggoseon(㵈) in the range of Korean music; secondly, Sangjo and Cheonghwangjong(淸黃鍾) Gyemyeonjo are the same tones only with a difference of an octave in the register, and so are Hajo and Cheonghwangjong Pyeongjo; and finally, the basic note(Gung), 黃(C), of Sangjo and Hajo in the Tang Pipa is the same “c” with a difference of an octave as the basic note(Gung), 潢(c), of Yukji(六指) Cheonghwangjonggung in Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo.
