Mandang Lee Hye-ku’s Study of Japanese Music -Focusing on Research Achievements and Teaching Methods-

Lee, Ji-sun

In this article, I examined the research achievements and teaching methods of Mandang Lee Hye-ku’s Japanese music. Mandang began researching Japanese music from 1953 and wrote a total of 16 papers for 45 years until 1998, when he turned 90 years old. The subject of the study is Gigaku, Three Kingdoms Music, Komagaku, Togaku, and Saibara. His research can be divided into a study of the history of music through literature review and a study of the substance of music through analysis of sheet music, and ultimately finding the characteristics of Korean music through comparison with Korean and Chinese music rather than focusing on Japanese music itself. 30% of Mandang's Japanese music studies were published in Japanese in Japan, which has great significance in that it enables academic communication with the Japanese music world. Mandang actively utilized his research in education. His lectures on Japanese music were conducted in a way that was linked to research, and by taking a method of comparison with Korean music, he made the students clearly aware of the commonalities and differences of Korean-Japanese music. In Mandang’s academic progress, a lot of the modifier “first” is attached. He opened and paved the way for the study of oriental music as well as Korean musicology. It is no exaggeration to say that the fact that today’s musicology in Korea has grown academically in various fields, and that many musicologists and musicians are active, is the result of Mandang’s passion for the development of Korean musicology and fostering successors throughout his life.
