Mandang Lee Hye-gu and Japanese music academy -Focusing on human exchange and academic activities-

Lee, Ji-sun

This article examined the activities of Mandang Lee Hye-gu in the Japanese music academy through personal exchanges and academic activities. Mandang began interacting with Japanese music academia in 1941 after meeting with Kishibe Shigeo. Mandang and Hayashi Kenzo had many things in common in academic interests and research methods. Kishibe and Hayashi dedicated their articles to Mandang’s 60th Anniversary book and continued academic exchange. Mandang was the first Korean to speak at the Society for Research in Asiatic Music. He published papers comparing Japanese music with Korean music in the journal and introduced Korean musicology to the Japanese academic community since the late 1950s. He introduced foreign scholars to the Korean Musicological Society from 1959, and from 1976 he led the Komagaku Research Society for the purpose of joint research of Korean-Japanese music. This movement of Mandang had a considerable influence on the development of Korean musicology in Japan. Mandang was the history of the exchange of living Korean-Japanese music that continued communication from the first generation to the third generation of the Japanese music academy. His overseas exchange activities were the driving force for Korean musicology to grow internationally.
