A Study on Musical Achievements of Nangye Park-Yeon in Public Office -Focusing on His Official Life-

Lee, Jang-won

Nangye Park-Yeon(1378~1458) is a figure who contributed to the realization of Yeak in the early years of the Joseon Dynasty by establishing court music and producing musical instruments. Called one of the three major musical saints of Korea, he is regarded as important in the history of music, so that there have been active researches on his musical achievements and view of music. However, despite the necessity to research Park-Yeon’s official life focusing on musical institution to clearly understand his achievements, there have been no reviews on this part. Thus, this study examined the grade and duties of public posts that were ordained to Park-Yeon. Based on it, this study examined the service period of concurrent post that was not clearly revealed till today, and also comparatively analyzed his musical achievements in accordance with his public posts. Regarding his official life before working for Akhak, the contents of “Sindobimyeong” of Nangyeyugo were quoted. Because most of the public posts were exaggeratedly recorded just like the posthumous conferment of honors, it was not contradictorily connected to the grade of sixth-grade Uiyeonggobusa initially shown in The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, this study concluded that it would need to modify the contents presenting the working departments only when quoting “Sindobimyeong”. Meanwhile, through the records of The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, this study comparatively analyzed Park-Yeon’s musical achievements in accordance with the moving path of public posts based on the grade of public posts and musical events. As the existing researches only depended on the records of the annals about concurrently held with Bongsang Pangwan, the name of omitted Akhak-Byeoljwa could not be understood, and the service period was estimated as three years, which was the limitation. However, in the results of comparison by keeping in mind the characteristics of Akhak-Byeoljwa post in which he could comprehensively work from third-grade to sixth-grade, he held the positions of other departments concurrently for about 20 years from the 7th year to 26th year of King Sejong reign. Thus, most of the music projects he participated in were done when he was in the position of Akhak-Byeoljwa. The service period of Akhak-Byeoljwa that left numerous musical events was divided into three parts such as Gwanseupdogamsa, change of job, and afterwards based on the moving path of public posts. For about a year from December of the 13th year of King Sejong reign, his position was changed to Gwanseupdogamsa for a moment to establish court music for Hoerye. The King Sejong ordered his appointment as there were lots of important duties such as creation of movements, recruitment of court musicians, and production of instruments for Hoerye and dancing tools like official uniform. This could be estimated as a dispatched official based on the name of public post in Byeolgam recorded by recording officers of the time. After the 15th year of King Sejong reign when he returned to Akhak, he took in charge of major positions like Panbongsangsisa, Gongjochamui, and Yejochamui, which could be regarded as the period in which he devoted himself to the establishment of civilization system focusing on ancestral ritual formalities. Through the elaborate process of historical research based on the ancient statute, he left a legacy of achievements in the recreation of ritual ceremony by complementing ancestral ritual music, utensils for ancestral rites, altar, and ancestral ritual method. Akhak-Jejo was successively held from when appointed as Insunbuyun of the second grade in the 26th year of King Sejong reign to King Danjong reign. The musical events of this time were relatively insignificant, which was contrasting to the events of Akhak-Byeoljwa. However, he faithfully assisted King Sejong until he passed away like taking in charge of works related to royal family in the position of Insunbuyun and Insubuyun, and getting involved in the performance of Buddhist song presented to King Sejong in the process of Buddhist ceremony in a newly-built Buddhist temple. During the King Danjong reign, after being appointed as Jaheondaebu of the second grade for the credit of deeply researching music, he reached Yemungwandaejehak. This shows that Park-Yeon is not only a musicologist, but also a scholar equipped with moral character, familiar with philosophy and literature. Based on the analysis of grade and duties of Park-Yeon’s public posts, this study examined that it was the period of concurrently holding Akhak-Byeoljwa and Akhak-Jejo. The significance of this study was to establish the measures for researching the history of man, which could understand the path of musical events in accordance with Park-Yeon’s public posts.
