The Review on the Use of Bak in Aak

Lee, Dong-hee

Nowadays, in Korean traditional music, Bak is also organized in Aak, but the original Aak is played only by instruments for Aak. Therefore, this thesis analyzes relevant literature such as Goryeosa Akji, Akhakgwebeom, Siakhwasung, Chungwantonggo, Daehanyejeon, Joseonak Gaeyo and Joseon Aakyoram. Based on a careful analysis of these texts, I investigate when Bak was included in Aak. As a result of my research, I concluded that Bak was first included in the instrumentation of Aak during the Japanese colonial era. From Goryeosa Akji to Daehanyejeon, there was no Bak composition in Aak, but the Joseonak Gaeyo, which was compiled in the early days of the Japanese colonial era, did not contain the instrumentation of Aak at that time; furthermore, the composition of the Munmyo Jeryeak at that time was not mentioned by Ganesune Kiyosuke, who visited to Joseon from 1912 to 1913. However, based on the records of the Joseon Aakyoram and the photographs about the Yiwangjik Aakbu of the ‘Chinese Joseon Music Survey’, it was found that Bak was arranged in the Deungga and Heonga of Aak in 1921. In other words, Bak can be judged to have been included in the instrumentation of Aak at some point between 1913 and 1921. The reason why Bak was included in Aak of this period is assumed to be the absolute status of Bak contained in relation to the beginning and end of the music, practical considerations, and intentional changes caused by the transfer of Munmyo Jeryeak to the Japanese Government-General of Korea. But considering the legitimacy of the Aak, which had existed for more than 800 years since it was introduced on the Korean Peninsula, it was assumed that Bak was excluded from the Aak and that it would not be difficult to proceed with the music, based on Akseo and Akhakgwebeom. Therefore, careful consideration of the problem of using Bak in the Aak are required.
