Meaning of Seong Hyeon(成俔)’s Music experience and it’s Recordings in 15th Century

Song, Hye-jin

Seong Hyeon(成俔: 1439~1504) was a high ranked civil officer who served many positions in the Joseon Dynasty. Especially, Seong had knowledge on music in depth, and personally enjoyed playing geomungo over his life time. He led the project publishing Akhakgwebeom, the encyclopedia of court ritual music explaining its theory and cannon while he was holding additional post at Jangakwon institute. Heobaekdangjip and Yongjaechonghwa are collections of his writings telling what he had learnt and felt in his life time. Many of his essays in the books are related to musical issues. Even though the collections contain quite a lot episodes about the music performed at that time throughout a large number of pages. The research focused on and carefully examined two different viewpoints in the descriptions written by the royal court and by Seong Hyeon, in the stance of both the host and the participant. In addition, the research explored extraordinary musical experience and enjoyment of music Seong Hyeon had gone through during his official trips to province to province, by looking at his discreet statement on local institutions and local music cultures. Among his writings the description on seasonal court event, acrobatic show for greeting foreign envoys in Pyeongyang, banquets for Confucian scholars and munmyo ritual, as well as many kind of royal ceremonies is significant as it not only provides historical fact, but also gives clue about the atmosphere of the musical venue, never found in the Annals. Moreover, his writings on Gangwon-do province shaman ritual, the old instruments, and Jangakwon’s duty show his insights and active attitude of enjoyment. It can be said that Seong Hyeon had seen plenty of royal court rites and their musical accompaniment, and diligently wrote about the features of musical performance he had observed in detailed description with concrete terms and predicates on the basis of his background musical knowledge. From the review of annals it was verified that the court events stated in Seong’s travelogue had been actually held. He devotedly described the mood and fever at the venue as an observer’s point of view.
