Musical Comparative Study of Chunhyangga’s Ibyeolga -Focusing on Jinyang Passage-

Jeong, Jin

Chunhangga’s Ibyeolga has been actively passed down with long history. The Ibyeolga’s Jinyangjo of the five master singer after 20th century by the musical structure and characteristic is comparatively studied. This study examined the musical expression pattern of the versions and the singers in the identical passage and elucidated the musical styles and the pointing spot that are pursued in each version. First, Ibyeolga can be divided into six paragraphs according to contents, and there are partial differences in editorial and rhythm in the case of Dongpyeonje and Seopyeonje. This difference is clearly revealed through the composition of rhythm and the existence of Aniri and dialogue. The fact that Jungmori rhythm is used mainly for each paragraph show that old style characteristic of early Ibyeolga is remained in each version. Second, The third paragraph is composed of Jinyangjo and Gyemyeonjo in all rhythms of Dongpyeonje and Seopyeonje, and this can partially identify the musical pointing spot of each version. The first half of Jinyangjo passage shows difference in editorials and melodies according to version and singer, whereas the latter half is generally identical. Third, The buchimsae used in Jinyangjo passage is divided into Dongpyeonje and Seopyeonje, which are revealed through the using ratio of Daemadidaejangdan and Utbuchim. Dongpyeonje singer used Daemadidaejangdan and Seopyeonje singer utilized Utbuchim. Especially, Choi Seonghui actively used Utbhchim for Seopyeonje by using 56% of Utbuchim. Fourth, Dongpyeonje singers show a similar using pattern of Buchimsae, while Seopyeonje is distinguished by version. Among them, Kim Yeonsu and Kim Sohee showed the similar usage of Buchimsae, and this appear the differences from the tone of Choi Seunghui. Kim Yeonsu and Kim Sohee used more than five kinds of Buchimsae including the Daemadidaejangdan and Juseobuchim unused by Choi Seunghui. Therefore, the musical change of Kim Yeonsu and Kim Sohee is revealed mainly in Buchimsae, unlike Jeong Jeongryul version of Seopyeonje. Fifth, In the case of Jinyangjo passage, three rhythms such as Bonjo, Utchungjo and Hachungjo were selectively used according to the singers. Park Bongsul, Choi Seunghui and Kim Sohee used only Bonjo and Utchungjo, whereas Seong Uhyang and Kim Yeonsu used all three rhythms. Among them, Park Bongsul show the highest use rate of Utchungjo among the five singers, and the latter half of passage is only composed of Utchungjo. It shows the change of the main character’s mind through the comparison of Bonjo and Utchungjo. Sixth, The change of tone was active in order of Park Bongsul, Seong Uhyang, Kim Yeongsu, Kim Sohee, Choi Seunghui and among them Seong Uhyang of Dongpyeonje actively used Byeoncheong. Through this, Dongpyeonje singers mainly focus on the musical composition through the change of tone. On the other hand, in the sound of Seopyeonje singers, the mixed mode of Bonjo and Utcheongjo and the specific melody type of sol-la-do-re-mi were used and the sound of Dongpyeonje singers clearly distinguished as a tone.
