A study on the origin and meaning of Heonga of Mohwagwan established in national welcoming ceremony during Joseon dynasty

Yoon, Ah-young

Heonga(헌가, lit. instruments on the royal court) of Mohwagwan(모화관, lit. house representing of admiring china) which had been established in yeongjeobuisik(영접의식), the national welcoming ceremony was regarded not as music or its formation but as mountain-shaped stage in spite of sharing the same name with one performed inside the royal court. However heonga of Mohwagwan was presumed to be the musical stage presented by musicians of the official musical organization, Jangagwon(장악원), because the relevant records show the evidence of the musical instruments and the participation of Jangagwon. Heonga of Mohwagwan in the national welcoming ceremony might have played a representative role that shows the highest diplomatic level of royal welcoming ceremony rituals as Heonga inside the royal palace yard had. Originally, heonga of Mohwagwan formed as two stages had been a long tradition of Joseon dynasty at least since the king Sejong’s reign, had been reduced one stage because of diplomatic climate change with china and the burden of structuring expense. Also, after the war Byeongja Horan(병자호란, lit. Second Manchu invasion of Korea) in 1637, Heonga had changed from playing Heongaak(헌가악, lit. music of the royal court) to presenting decorations with puppets because of loss of musicians and instruments and diplomatic climate change between two countries. Therefore, the mountain shaped stage depicted on the painting (1725, the first year of king Yeongjo’s reign) was not the same with the one before the war Byeongja Horean. Heonga had changed to the same object to yungeo(윤거, lit. pulling stage) or sandae(산대, lit. mountain-shaped stage) because of these changes, therefore it had became considered as an useless object, and it had been often told abolition of it. However, as Heonga had still has purpose of entertaining visitors and indispensable symbol representing auspicious occasion, the ostensible could last till the end of Joseon dynasty.
