A Study on the Formation of the Organization of Current Gagok Accompaniment Instrument

Choi, Sun-A

Gagok(歌曲), one of the typical songs of pungryubang(風流房) in late Chosun, was sung along the organization of orchestral accompaniment which adjusts danso(短簫) and yanggeum(洋琴) to geomungo[玄琴], gayageum(伽倻琴), sepiri[細觱篥], daegeum(大笒), haegeum(奚琴), and janggu(杖鼓) today. But according to the results of examining the forms of gagok accompaniment in phonograph records and those of gagok accompaniment sent from Gyeongseong(京城) Chungang(中央) Broadcasting Station, we can see that instruments for gagok accompaniment in the former half of the 20th century were much simpler than those today. Also, in gramophone albums or broadcasts, gayageum was hardly used for the accompaniment of gagok, and this should be because gayageum was regarded as an instrument to accompany folk vocal music mostly. It is observed that in the organization of gagok instruments, gayageum was excluded but performance was added in the 1970’s, too. It seems that today’s organization of gagok instruments was established when Ha Gyu-il was appointed as choktak of iwangjikaakbu(李王職雅樂部)(1926 to 1937) and taught gagok to aaksaeng(雅樂生) as well as the staff. Even in the gagok performance of iwangjikaakbu, however, gagok was not necessarily sung along the organization of orchestral accompaniment including geomungo, gayageum, sepiri, daegeum, haegeum, and janggu. Since Korea gained independence, those produced from the training institute of iwangjikaakbu formed the pivot of gagok performance. The then gagok organization was all attributed to the organization of gagok instruments during the period of iwangjikaakbu. In the early 1970’s, gagok was not always accompanied with the organization of orchestral accompaniment including geomungo, gayageum, sepiri, daegeum, haegeum, and janggu, either; however, it seems that around that time, the organization of gagok instruments was getting generalized and fixed gradually like today’s. In the end, the tradition of accompaniment to the song with the gayageum in the late Joseon period was in crisis in the first half of the 20th century but could be fully recovered by accepting the song in the iwangjikaakbu.
