Two theories of Ujo and Pyeongjo in Pansori -Comparison of theories of musical mode in Pansori between Baek Daewoong and Lee Bohyeong-

Shin, Eun-Joo

This thesis compared theories of musical mode in Pansori between Baek Daewoong and Lee Bohyeong that are used most widely in analyzing Pansori in academic world. This thesis associated advanced research on Sanjo which has the same characteristics in terms of music. Theories of musical mode in Pansori between Baek Daewoong and Lee Bohyeong appear to be very different. However, when looking into what Baek Daewoong mentioned about detailed characteristics of tone in Ujo and Pyeongjo, it is found that Baek Daewoong’s melody frame and Sigimsae in Ujo and Pyeongjo and Lee Bohyeong’s have much in common. Nonetheless, due to a difference in what is considered important – in other words, Baek Daewoong placed an emphasis on a tone and interval of each tone while Lee Bohyeong considered main melody frame and Sigim more important than each tone - a different conclusion is reached when construing musical mode based on above mentioned two theories. If we put together discussion of Sanjo that is the same as Pansori in terms of music, it is found that analyzing Sanjo and musical mode based on a tone only has a limit. Considering Toiseong, Yoseong, ornament and development of melody as well as a tone is required to explain Ujo, Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo accurately. In conclusion, function and characteristic of each sound as well as a tone should be considered in construing a musical mode in Pansori and Sanjo properly. This is different from a case which a musical mode is discerned based on a tone only distinguishing it into Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo when it comes to music played within the palace or enjoyed by the nobility. Characteristics of sound as well as those of a tone should be considered as ornamentation is used a lot in folk music such as Pansori and Sanjo and expression of feeling is maximized. This has the same context as a case which Yoseong, Toiseong, Kkeokneuneum etc are included in the nature of Tori in a folk song.
