This paper explores English books on Korean traditional music (gugak), dance, and theater. They can provide additional information as they are written by not only Korean scholars but also scholars from different nationality and backgrounds, targeting wider range of readers in the world. By sorting and analysing themes, authors, and publishers of the publications, the research not only lists up the bibliographic data, but also examines history, trends, and academic development of the Korean music scholarship. The multi faceted perspectives on these writings help to self-inspect the history of scholarship, while at the same time harden the ground for future research on Korean music. The books in early stage are introductory and informative as they were simply aimed at introducing the scholarship to the Western world. In the 21st century, however, increasing number of scholars, including foreign ethnomusicologists such as Andrew Killick, Simon Mills, and Nathan Hesselink, published books and thus the Korean traditional musicology proceeded and developed in a cooperative procedure. The works, for example Korean Musicology Series, well reflect the collaboration of the scholars in Korea and overseas, and show more professionally and academically woven articles. Recently, from the 2010s, scholars discuss gugak as one of global cultural contents, for example in relation to the UNESCO's World Heritage of Human Culture or music festivals. Representative musicians like Yi Ji-young and Kim Joon Young publish books on Korean music instruments for their practical use among composers and performers worldwide. The books intend to help composers and performers outside Korea collaborating with Korean traditional music.
