The modes of Korean traditional music which were studied through written records have shown us historical continuity and systematic characteristics. Several confirmed deficiencies in the early study on the modes of Korean traditional music should be overcome. We should pay special attention to utilizing the system of theory, the terminology and the conception of Western music when we explain the modes of Korean traditional music. Because if we explain the modes of Korean traditional music in Western way, it would lead us to understand the system of Korean modes in Western way. It is very difficult to find historical consistency in the modes of Korean folk music. There is no difference in the basic principle of the modes of Korean folk music, but we could find several delicate differences in the modes of it according to the genres and the situations of music. Finding these differences can be said an exquisiteness of studying the modes in Korean folk music. I think it is about time to develop a methodology to study only the modes in Korean folk music. I think it is needed to discuss about studying the modes of written and oral Korean traditional music differently. The aspects of sigimsae found in performing Korean traditional music are quite different from various musical situations. It would be very valuable to have a deep study on these differences which work on producing musical beauties. The result of this study would help to develop the technique for performing Korean traditional music in the future. I think that clearly conceptualizing and defining the sigimsae in letters and presenting the result to the concerned world would be one of the most important matters in hand of Korean musicological circle.
